Jack is now one year old! Oh how time flies....I did cry that night a little thinking about how he is growing up. Mema and Marleigh were here to celebrate the day with us. He is such a big boy and has seriously changed a lot in just the past week. He now understands simple directions like "Go get your ball" or "Give it to mommy". He also loves to feed Kurt and I and has become quite a challenge to feed himself. He will eat peach yogurt and can spit out a tiny little piece of peach from a huge bite. He goes back and forth between liking to feed himself and liking only baby food. He loves to push his Caterpillar truck around the house and loves his new trike that Mema and Papa bought for him for his birthday. He is now becoming a little obsessed over "things" when he sees them and wants them. For example, we went to a toy store the other day and he saw this cute little sugar glider and snatched it off the shelf. When we tried to put it back, he gave a pouty face and cried. Of course, sweet Mema bought it for him. He seriously loves the sugar glider. He is also becoming quite attached to people. For the first time, he reached for someone else to hold him...his Mema.
He loves to give hugs and kisses now, mostly to his stuffed animals. Either way, its the cutest thing I have ever seen. He lays on the ground and gives Marleigh's big tiger a hug. He loves to give open mouth kisses which is one of those things I have been waiting my whole life to receive from my kids. So precious. I would consider him a cuddler...he likes to come up and get loves from mom while playing. He is so sweet at night after he nurses...he lays in my arms while I sing to him and then goes right to sleep in his bed. He loves to hold his littly pony and is still very attached to his paci (or pacis!). Sometimes he carries 3 around at a time.
Kurt loves taking Jack to the pool and for the first time Jack is noticing little things like birds. Kurt said he talked and chatted with the bird the whole time while at the pool. He loves to be chased and loves to play in his tunnels. He loves chasing the cats, but has yet to catch one. You always know when he sees one of the cats, because his face lights up and he smiles from ear to ear.
Jack isn't walking quite yet. He is able to let go of the table while standing, and you can tell he wants to walk, but just hasn't quite figured it out yet. Another one of his favorite activities is riding around in the laundry hamper. He also loves going to dynamoze. He has a new friend Mady who is a week older than him, so it should be fun to see them grow together. One other thing he loves is climbing! He is very adventurous and has no fear. He is definitely all boy.
On his birthday we went to the pool and then out to dinner at Paloma Blanca...I know, the choice seems a little influenced by mom. But Jack loved it. He even got a special dish with a candle. From Mema and Papa, he got a new tricycle (that I can push) and a personalized book from Flattenme.com. It's so cool. He also received a scrapbook from the first year of his life that Mema and Marleigh made. Mamo and Papa got him his fabulous Caterpillar truck, which he plays with all day long (he has even learned to get on and off of it!), awesome light-up Cardinal shoes, a Steiff dog and a bunch of more gifts that he will open at his party. The shoes seriously make him look like a big boy. I think Mamo is going to be shocked next time she sees him at how much he has changed! Uncle BJ got Jack a cool monster puppet and a great book that teaches him about colors with really cool photographs. Jack also received a wind-up giraffe, swim trunks, and a new football for his birthday. Kurt and I are giving him a new outdoor swing and possibly a new stuffed animal since he loves to hug them.
It's been an amazing year...watching God continue to knit together a little human being that I am so privileged to raise. It's been a challenging year and yet full of joy. We've learned to trust the Lord more and also to be patient during the deserts. We have never taken a day for granted with our baby boy and we know how fortunate we are that he is healthy. I have decided to write him a letter each year on his birthday and then give them to him when he older. Here is a song that I sing to Jack that I put in the letter.
Hold On To Jesus by Erin O’Donnell
You're a little piece of heaven
You're a golden ray of light
And I wish I could protect you
From the worries of this life
But if there's one thing I could tell you
It's no matter what you do
Hold to Jesus
He's holding on to you
The world will try to tell you
That might is more than right
That beauty's on the outside
And being good's a losing fight
But remember what I've told you
Because the world will make you choose
Hold to Jesus
He's holding on to you
Hold on to Jesus
Cling to His love
Rest deep in His mercy
Whenever things get rough
Don't lose sight of His goodness
And don't ever doubt this truth
That when you hold on to Jesus
He's holding on to you
Hear me dear Jesus
Rock this little one to sleep
Keep him close when he's scared
And give him grace when he is weak
I know he'll stumble
But I know he'll make it through
If you hold to him just like
You said You'd do
Hold him Jesus
And he'll hold on tight to You
